This NSEA webinar introduces the concept of neurodiversity to higher education professionals. We will explore the current research on various types of neurodiversity, and examine the different models of viewing disability, including medical and social models. We will discuss common societal barriers that may limit the independence of neurodivergent people and review suggestions for accommodations at home, the workplace, and in educational settings.
Finally, you will learn the importance of broad public awareness about what is commonly referred to as "invisible" disabilities. Understanding this material is essential, and FSU offers a full Professional Certification online that you might enjoy later. Even from this brief overview though, you will find that complex, interconnecting forces impact neurodivergent people. With the information from this training, you will be better equipped to promote neurodiversity and inclusive approaches in your field.

As a researcher at Florida State University since 1998, Oehme has been the director of the Institute for Family Violence Studies (IFVS) in the College of Social Work since 2007. In 2011, she was named an FSU Distinguished University Scholar. Her research and work target research-based strategies to promote healthy individuals across the lifespan. The IFVS builds large-scale training projects and specializes in interactive, web-based learning to promote research-based knowledge. Her programs have trained thousands of professionals, and her scholarly work has been published in many journals, including the Harvard Journal of Law and Gender, Stanford Law and Policy Review, Innovative Higher Education, and Policing: A Journal of Policy and Practice.
